Most people who’ve worked with me are quite amazed at what a professional producer can do with a song; it’s a bit of a kid-in-a-candy-store thing with basically any option you can think of available at your request. And the luxury of being able to take all the time you want to get a great vocal or instrumental track recorded is a great experience as well; no pressure to “get it right” while the studio clock burns, the ability to do it when inspiration strikes, to punch in and fix anything you’re not loving, to really get a great performance of your song.
I produced several records for Michael Brecker, one of the world’s greatest saxophonists, and he once commented on how he liked the fact that no matter what he or the project asked, I never said “I can’t do that”. And your experience will be the same; I enjoy the challenge!
I recommend that, as a point of reference, you might send me some ideas on tracks whose sound and feel and texture you like to give me an idea of how you’d like things orchestrated; I always start from scratch rather than with loops or pre-recorded material, so every last sound on the tune is completely customizable. I work in stages, so I’ll send you the first chunk of the tune for your feedback and for you to experiment with recording to, and we keep refining until you’ve got something that really speaks for you.
